Aprilaire Coil Cleaning: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide
If your Aprilaire system’s coils are caked with dust and grime, professional coil cleaning in Brooklyn typically runs $180 to $450 depending on access and how badly the buildup has set in. We stock Aprilaire-compatible cleaning solutions and coil tools on our trucks, so most Brooklyn jobs are completed in a single visit. Most owners discover the problem when their air conditioner starts running longer to hit the same temperature, or when the air coming from the vents smells faintly musty even after a duct cleaning.
The reality with Aprilaire coils is simple: they sit in the airflow path year-round here in Brooklyn, and between the humidity off the East River and the fine dust that works its way through older pre-war buildings near Prospect Park, these coils collect a film faster than most homeowners expect. A coil that’s coated in grime forces the whole Aprilaire system to work against itself. The compressor runs hotter, the blower pushes against more resistance, and your energy bill climbs while the house stays warmer than it should.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
Aprilaire coil cleaning applies across their evaporator coil lines, but the approach shifts depending on which model is installed. The Aprilaire 5000 series and the newer Aprilaire E100 and E130 dehumidifier coils are among the most common we see in Brooklyn homes, and each sits in a different housing configuration. The Aprilaire 700 and 800 series in-line dehumidifiers also carry accessible coils, but the access panels differ enough that a wrong guess about your model can mean removing panels that don’t need to come off, which adds time and risk.
The quickest way to identify your coil setup is to check the data plate on the side of the Aprilaire unit. It lists the model number and, on most units manufactured after 2015, the coil part number as well. If the plate is worn or painted over, we can usually confirm the model from the dimensions: Aprilaire coil housings in the 5000 series measure roughly 14 by 20 inches, while the E-series dehumidifier coils are notably smaller and sit behind a single lower access panel. For Aprilaire specifically, we recommend OEM coils when replacement is needed rather than aftermarket equivalents. The aftermarket versions we’ve tried in the past fit loosely in the original housing, and a loose coil rattles against the frame every time the blower cycles. Our independent shop keeps OEM Aprilaire cleaning kits and replacement coils in stock because that’s what we’d put in our own homes.
One note for clarity: Mortons Air Duct Brooklyn is an independent service provider. We service Aprilaire equipment every week and stock the parts, but we are not affiliated with or endorsed by Aprilaire.

Signs Your Aprilaire Coil Cleaning Is Failing
- The system runs constantly but the house barely cools. A coated coil can’t transfer heat the way it should. The Aprilaire system keeps running because the thermostat never reaches its set point, and the compressor works longer every cycle than it did a year ago.
- You notice a stale, damp smell from the vents. Brooklyn humidity settles on a dirty coil and stays there. That moisture mixed with dust creates exactly the kind of odor that makes homeowners think they need duct cleaning when the real problem is inches away on the coil itself.
- Frost or ice builds on the coil surface. A heavily fouled coil restricts airflow enough that the coil temperature drops below freezing. We see this more often in Brooklyn apartments where the air handler is tucked into a closet with poor return air, especially near the older buildings around Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy.
- Your summer electric bill jumps with no obvious change in behavior. A dirty Aprilaire coil adds measurable load to the compressor. When we clean a badly coated coil, homeowners often tell us the next bill drops noticeably.
- The coil looks dark or fuzzy through the access panel. You may be able to see the leading edge of the coil without removing the panel. If it looks like a dusty carpet instead of clean metal fins, it’s due for a cleaning.
How Much Does Aprilaire Coil Cleaning Cost in Brooklyn?
Coil cleaning for an Aprilaire system in Brooklyn typically falls between $180 and $450. The spread depends on three things: how accessible the coil is, how much buildup has accumulated, and whether the coil needs to be pulled for a deeper clean or can be serviced in place. A straightforward in-place cleaning on a coil with moderate dust runs on the lower end. A coil that’s been trapping Brooklyn air for five or more years, especially in a home with shedding pets, often needs the coil pulled and cleaned from both sides, which lands on the higher end.
| Service | Typical Brooklyn Price |
|---|---|
| In-place coil cleaning (light to moderate buildup) | $180 – $260 |
| Coil pull and deep clean (heavy buildup, pet hair, years of grime) | $300 – $450 |
| OEM Aprilaire coil replacement (if coil is damaged or corroded) | $350 – $750 installed |
| Coil cleaning plus full duct cleaning (common combo) | $650 – $1,100 |
Every price we quote is written and agreed to before any work starts. Paul Adeyemi’s rule on every job is simple: you know the number before a tool comes off the truck, and that number doesn’t change once we’re inside. No per-coil upcharges, no surprise line items.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
There are a few things you can safely check on your own. You can visually inspect the coil through the access panel if it’s reachable. You can change your Aprilaire filter on schedule and confirm the drain line isn’t clogged, since a backed-up drain is what often turns a dirty coil into a frozen one. You can note whether the outside condenser unit is clear of leaves and debris from Brooklyn street trees.
What you shouldn’t attempt is pulling the coil yourself. The coil sits in the refrigerant line path, and a wrong move bending a line or cracking a fitting turns a $250 cleaning into a far more expensive repair. We’ve also seen DIY jobs where owners used a stiff brush on the fragile aluminum fins and flattened them against each other, which reduces airflow permanently. If you’re comfortable with the basic checks, do those. If the coil itself is dirty, call us at (607) 536-9605 and we’ll get it done properly, with the floor under the unit protected and the work photographed before we leave.
FAQs
Most Aprilaire coils in Brooklyn should be cleaned every two to three years, though homes with shedding pets, nearby construction, or windows that stay open through the summer may need annual attention. Brooklyn’s humidity and older building stock shorten that interval compared to drier climates.
A dirty coil can almost always be cleaned successfully unless the fins are physically damaged or the aluminum has corroded through from years of moisture exposure. We clean far more coils than we replace, and only recommend replacement when cleaning would leave a compromised part in place. Call (607) 536-9605 and we’ll tell you honestly which one your Aprilaire needs.
Most coil cleanings in Brooklyn take between one and two hours on site. If we’re combining the coil cleaning with a full duct cleaning, the full visit may run three to four hours, which we’ll state before we schedule.
Yes. We carry OEM Aprilaire cleaning kits and replacement coils on our trucks, along with parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems. When we arrive, the part is usually already in the van, not ordered and promised for next week.
