Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Nikro Register & Grille Cleaning: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Nikro-compatible register and grille cleaning components for Brooklyn homes, with most replacements running between $85 and $210 installed depending on your specific model and how many registers are involved. We carry the common Nikro brush heads, valve seals, and filter elements on our trucks, so most jobs are done in one visit. The way owners usually find us is this: the register cleaning attachment starts losing suction, the brushes stop spinning under load, or the valve that controls airflow won’t stay where you set it, and suddenly the tool you rely on between full duct cleanings isn’t doing its job anymore.

Mortons Air Duct Brooklyn is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Nikro. We work on their equipment constantly because it’s what we use ourselves alongside Rotobrush and Abatement Technologies gear, and we know exactly which parts tend to wear out first in Brooklyn’s older homes.

Which Nikro Models This Applies To

If you’re running a Nikro register cleaning attachment, the parts we replace most often fit the RP-series register and grille tools and the brush heads that thread onto Nikro’s standard 2-inch vacuum hose connections. The critical thing to check before calling is the model plate on the side of your attachment. Nikro stamps their part numbers in small print, usually starting with “RP” or “BR,” and that number determines everything about which brush head, bearing, or seal fits your tool.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Brooklyn owners: Nikro changed the thread pitch on their brush head mounts about eight years back. Older RP-2 and RP-3 units use a coarser thread than the current RP-3X and RP-4 series. If you order a replacement brush online without checking the model plate, you can end up with a brush that threads on halfway and then seizes. We’ve seen it more times than we can count, usually from well-meaning owners trying to save a trip charge. On the OEM versus aftermarket question, Nikro’s own brushes hold their bristle stiffness longer in our experience, especially in pre-war Brooklyn buildings where decades of paint and grime are caked onto registers. A quality aftermarket brush can work fine for lighter use, but it tends to flatten faster when you’re scrubbing heavy buildup. We stock OEM Nikro parts for the units we service and can order anything we don’t have within two business days.

Signs Your Nikro Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing

  • Loss of suction at the register face. This usually points to a worn seal around the vacuum connection or a cracked body. The seal is cheap to replace; a cracked housing usually means a full swap.
  • Brushes that spin slowly or stall under light pressure. The drive bearing inside the brush head wears out, especially in homes where registers get cleaned frequently. Replacing the bearing restores the spin before it damages the shaft.
  • Air control valve won’t hold its setting. The internal spring and detent wear down over time, and the valve starts drifting closed mid-job. It’s a small part, but it makes the tool frustrating to use on multi-room cleaning runs.
  • Visible bristle flattening or shedding. If you’re finding brush fibers on the register or the floor, the head needs replacement. Shedding bristles also mean the brush isn’t scrubbing evenly anymore.
  • Unusual grinding or vibration when the motor runs. This is often a worn drive coupling or a bent shaft from someone forcing the tool into a tight register. We can usually replace the coupling on-site; a bent shaft sometimes means a full head replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Brooklyn homes, Nikro register cleaning part replacement generally falls between $85 and $210 installed. A new brush head is the most common job we do and typically runs $95 to $145. Seals, bearings, and valve components are smaller parts that usually land between $65 and $95 including labor. If your unit needs a full housing replacement, you’re looking at the higher end of that range.

What drives the cost is which part failed, whether it’s OEM Nikro or a quality aftermarket equivalent, and how many registers we’re cleaning while we’re there. You get a written price before any work starts, every time, no exceptions. The price we quote is the price you pay, and it includes the part, the labor, and whatever small hardware is needed for the install. Every replacement is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right, full stop.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself before calling us. Look at the model plate and write down the part number. Inspect the brush head for obvious bristle damage. Check that the vacuum connection is tight and the seal isn’t visibly cracked. These steps take five minutes and help us bring the right part on the first trip.

Where DIY goes wrong is when owners try to replace internal components without the right tools. The bearing inside a Nikro brush head sits under a pressed retaining ring, and prying it out with a screwdriver usually scars the housing or damages the shaft. The air valve has a small spring that’s easy to lose in a Brooklyn apartment floor register and nearly impossible to find again. And if your unit is still under warranty, opening the housing yourself can void it. For anything beyond a visual check, call us at (607) 536-9605 and we’ll get it handled properly.
